In connection with the 40th anniversary of one of the most devastating earthquakes that struck Montenegro on April 15, 1979, the Minister of the Government of Montenegro and the chairman of the Commission for Disaster Damage Assessment, Maria Vucinovic, said that the earthquake and other more frequent natural disasters signal to us that we must work more responsibly and carry out even better preventive measures to reduce the damage from natural disasters.
“The fact is that natural disasters cannot be prevented or influenced by their destructive nature, but what we can and what we really need is the organized and synchronized work of all relevant services, both at the local and at the state level. We need to act cohesively all together in order to reduce the damage caused by natural disasters,” said M. Vucinovic.
The Minister of the Montenegrin Government also added that at present some of the country's municipalities are allocating funds from the budget for the implementation of preventive measures to contain the elements, which ultimately will lead to the reduction of serious consequences and causing major damage from various natural disasters.
Recall that today, exactly 40 years ago, a powerful destructive earthquake struck Montenegro and caused the death toll of 136 human lives, of which 101 died in Montenegro and 35 in Albania. The damage caused by the earthquake is estimated at more than $ 4 billion.
