The well-known US magazine USA Today published an article about the island of
Gospa-od-Shkrpjela in the Kotor bay.
This unusual island was formed as a result of mixing of centuries-old legends and traditions by the inhabitants of Perast and other cities of the bay.
Legend has it that on 22 July, 1452, sailors found the icon of the Virgin with the baby on a cliff in the sea. Since that day, a tradition has appeared - after returning from the voyage, the sailors left stones on the shore of the island of Gospa-od-Shkrpjela.
For many centuries the island was built by people, and at the depth of the bay there are hundreds of old sailing vessels that are filled with stones.
In the church there are a lot of works of art of famous artists: from Kotor Tripa Kokolja, the icon of Gospa-od-Shkrpjela, created in 1452 by artist Lovro Dobričević.
