After 68 years in Montenegro, the water fern "Marsilea quadrifolia" appeared again on the
Skadar Lake.
It is a rare and endangered species of plant in the whole of Europe, which gradually disappears from the natural habitat.
The establishment of control by the national parks of Montenegro will make it possible to monitor the state of the population, due to the risk of overgrowth of the habitat and the disappearance of this species in this locality.
"Marsilia four-leaved" is a water fern that looks like a four-leafed clover, which grows in shallow water in stagnant, muddy and swampy water.
According to the Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats (Bern Convention), the European Directive on the Conservation of Natural Habitats and Wild Fauna and Flora (EU Directive Habitat An IIb and An IVb), the fern has received the status of an internationally protected plant species.
It is protected by national legislation and is on the list of proposals for entering into the Red Book of Montenegro.
