For several days, residents of the Podgorica region "Zagorič" are watching new neighbors living on the roofs of houses. According to information received from the Center for the Study and Protection of Birds, two birds were observed, most likely migratory birds, on the banks of the Moraca River and near Duklje.
This is the first evidence confirming the presence of white storks (Ciconia Ciconia) in the capital, taking into consideration that the first mention of these birds appeared in 1894 (Skadar Lake) from the famous Balkan ornithologist of that time, Otmar Reiser, an Austrian.
Montenegro, together with Albania, are the countries with the least number of storks in Europe, although for them here is the ideal habitat.
The leadership of the Center for the Study and Protection of Birds has put forward a number of initiatives to create new platforms for nesting birds next year and to restore populations of these species.
The first such initiative this year was taken by the municipality of Bijelo Polje, which financed the construction of the platform, while CEDIS was involved in its installation. In addition to this platform, last year the one was installed in Beranje, instead of the existing nesting site, and another platform is planned with the financial support of the municipality of Beranje.
