Caves are one of the most amazing creations of nature. It can be found everywhere: in German, Israel, Ukraine, Russia, France, Thailand...
Blue Cave in Montenegro (other names are Blue Grotto, Plava Spilja) is a natural sightseeing in Montenegro, which presents a big grot with total area about 300m2. Arches height is 25m, the depth is 3-4m. Blue cave has two entrances with boats constantly arriving. Blue Cave has got its name because during the bright sunny days, sun rays are refracted and illuminate from beneath, so the water seems blue. The effect is created as if water sparkles from the bottom. Water with reflection of the walls of the cave, also creates unusual shades on them. It is better to visit the cave before midday. It is very beautiful in this part of the day. You can swim inside of the cave. Water is quite warm and it worth of it... The depth exceeds 45m in some places and sometimes people practice diving. There is also disadvantage - sometimes there are many tourists and possibly you will have just 10-15 min for swimming.
Lifehack: you will not be provided with swim vest, so if you are tired, just grab buoy and ropes around a boat.
Blue cave is located on the Lustica peninsula, between Golden Bay and Wet Mountain Harbour cape. The distance to Herceg Novi is 6 sea miles. You can get to Blue cave just by the sea, by boat or yacht. If you travel to Blue cave, it is worth to visit Mamula Fortress by boat or cutter departing every hour (price 8-10 €) from the beaches Mirista and Zanjic. The trip takes about 10-15 min. and gives you opportunity to enjoy: wonderful landscapes of Adriatic sea and take amazing memorizing photos;watch magnificent mountains of Boka-Kotor bay passing by;see coastal towns and villages (sometimes Croatia is seen far away...)
By sailing around Lustica, you can see beautiful channels and small islands with huge fortresses and quiet monasteries on them...
Besides, you can visit Blue cave and Mammula fort as a single see voyage from Herceg-Novi or Igalo. But the price will be higher than departing from the beaches Mirista and Zanjic. In Igalo you can depart from two places on the shore: near the restaurant Obala and the beach La Bamba. In Herceg-Novi boats depart from the shore near the beach Skver and from the main berth. There are many boats, they depart as soon as enough people. Working hours start from 10:00 (and even from 9:30) and return at 16:00. But departure time is various (from 16:00 till 18:00). Which is to say, you will return on the same boat.
Lifehack: if fall of the waves is big, you will not get into the cave (that what happened with our friends). The cave is not high. There is just a half of the meter between ceiling and boat. So if the weather is bad, boat will not be able to get in there.
Blue cave: what is special about it?
- First, water is really blue. It has an unreal, beautiful and saturated color.
- Second: water here is very salty, so even inexperienced swimmers will feel comfortable.
- Third, strangely, but water is amazingly warm in the cave, despite that the air is quite fresh.
A similar cave is located on the Island of Cecilia in Italy. But unlike the cave in Italy, Plava Spilja is not contaminated by numerous tourists and stays an incredibly beautiful and clean place on Adriatic seashore. Blue cave is really magic place. You should visit it to immerse yourself into the atmosphere of blue light, mysteriousness and unusual natural beauty.
