The construction of the Palace started in 1863 and finished in 1867. Originally it looked like a simple two-storey building with a terrace on the second floor under the roof. Two wings were attached to the building in 1871 and for the time of the 50th anniversary of Nichola's reign in 1910, the Palace has taken its present appearance.
Palace decoration is an exact copy of its original interior, which meets all the requirements of royal family. The Palace has been decorated in the style of Art Nouveau, which is characterized by numerous decorative elements, floral patterns, and complex forms of interior finish.
Walls of the Palace are covered with silk and decorated by paintings. Parquet-flooring is covered with carpets and the ceiling is decorated with stucco moulding.
The National Museum was opened in 1926 indoors of the Palace. The collections of parade and trophy arms, flags and colors, military medals are presented at the museum. There is also a library, which takes up 4 halls and contains about 10000 of rare books, including ancient folios with personal authors' signatures and the first Montenegrin printings.
