The Magara (or Megara) Cave is located in town-council of Podgorica, next to Tolosi town, at the heart of the mountain Velje. The popularity of the cave was provided by its availability. It is located near a residential place and can be seen from a road. Despite it seems neglected, the cave looks incredible inside.
The Megara Cave can be called on of the most interesting objects for speleological exploration.
The exploration of the cave was started under the supervision of Professor Iovan Petrovich first in 1962. Just then some have suggested that it has supernatural power, so the cave was called "magic" and "creepy". After three decades another scientist- speleologist Vidak Yukich after his visit to the cave, provided an idea to transform the cave into the center of alternative medicine. The scientist has presumed that atmosphere inside of the cave is ideal for treatment and relief of asthma symptoms, respiratory disease and some psychoneurological conditions.
Scientific and speleological exploration of the cave has not been performed properly. First attempts to complete description of all galleries and inner units have been taken more than 10 years ago, but the work has not been completed. The cave is still waiting to be explored.
The scientist- speleologist Vidak Yukich has provided an official name for the cave as "Megara" according to Megara school of thought founded by Euclid. Local population consider that the name "Megara" originated from the word "magic" because of the mysterious properties of this natural sightseeing of Montenegro. Citizens of Podgorica are sure that "Megara" means "magarad" (it is translated as "back side"). The cave was tagged with such name because it is very easy to get lost among its labyrinth.
