Museum of Perast town, founded on February 28, 1937, consists of museum collections, collected mostly from the local inhabitants and the heirs of the famous family of the second half of the XIX and early XX centuries.In addition to portraits of famous sailors, weapons and other historical artifacts, Perast archives since 1441 stored in the museum.
The museum is located in the municipality building of Perast on the square near the Church of St. Nicholas.The museum building was expanded in 1948, while the part of museum collections, related to Captain Marko Martinovic, were exhibited in the house on the outskirts of the town of Perast.In 1950, by decision of the Ministry of Education of Montenegro, Heritage Museum of Perast was created.In the Palace of Buyovich, one of the main historical monuments of the city, the museum is situated.The reconstruction of the palace was completed in 1957 by architect Ivan Zdravkovich.
In the 60s and 70s the museum occupied an important place in the cultural life and tourism of Boka Bay. From 1970 until 1979, the museum was merged with the memorial museum of Viskovich family.
The final stage in the development of the museum begab in 1992, when the museum became the segment of municipal public institutions "Museums", which also includes the Historic Museum with the Lapidarium and gallery of solidarity.After several years of restoration, the museum was re-opened in 1998 in honor of the 300th anniversary of maritime education and pedagogical work of Marko Martinovic.
Perast Museum holds many collections: historical, maritime, and collection of economic and cultural development of Perast during the rule of the Venetian Republic (1420-1797) and the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the 19th century.The museum also houses the collections of archives: archives of Perast municipality (1441-1945), an archive of primary school (1865-1950), an archive of Viskovich family (1457-1927), as well as libraries of families Viskovich and Balovich.
