Rose is a small village belonging to the municipality of
Herceg Novi and is located on the
Lustica peninsula in the Kotor bay (the distance to Herceg Novi is about 3 km along the sea through the Gulf).One can get to Rose by car from
Tivat and
Budva, following signs to Lustica.During the active navigation the village was used as a cargo port.
The first fortification on the peninsula near the Rose was built by Turks in the XVII century, but after numerous wars, the fortress was destroyed, and after being restored by the Austrians.
At the beginning of the XX century, the fortification was already converted by Italian forces - with the help of this fort, they guarded the bay from attacks from the sea. And after World War II, the fortress was used for a long time by the armed forces of Yugoslavia.
In recent years, the fort Rose was used as a garrison to accommodate soldiers with artillery batteries and machine-gun on the roof of fortifications around the perimeter. Inside it has its own power and water supply. Fort was even able to receive and repair small submarines in their own docks. Now the castle came into disrepair, but the Montenegrin government plans to turn this place into a museum.
Today Rose looks like a typical Mediterranean town.There is a beach in the village. Through the clear water and an abundance of marine creatures, Rose is considered to be one of the best diving centers of Montenegro.Porto Rosa Beach is partly covered with sand and the other part is concreted.From the beach you can reach Herceg Novi by boat.
