Bedem Fortress is located in the western part of modern Niksic
on the site of the old town of Upper Onogosht. The first mention of the fortress Bedem was recorded in 1518.
The fortress was built by the Turks in XVIII century after the conquest of the Slavic Onogosht. The upper town was surrounded by walls, where the Ottoman administration was, while the lower part of the settlement, inhabited by artisans, was outside the fortification and had their own defense system. Fortification was divided into western and eastern parts, besides the outer castle walls, it also had six towers located at the corners of the fortress. There is an oldest part of the fort in the middle of it - Castel, which was built in the VI century in the Roman period. The central building of the bastion includes a room for the guard and a deep basement, used for the storage of ammunition.
High area on the height of the fort were artillery platforms before, each of which housed 6-8 guns. The fortress was always a place of battles for the town during the many wars, the last battle at the walls of the bastion took place in 1878, when Niksic was set free by Montenegrin Prince Nikola I. Then Niksic gradually started to become urban settlement, and the need of fortifications was not required any more. The town start living a new life, attracting new settlers.
Ruins of Bedem Fortress today are protected by the state as a national historical monument. Relatively recently, the citadel complex has been undergone the restoration, after which its area has reached several hectares. The fortress is located on a hill, with views of the valley of Niksic and cliffs. Currently the ruins of Niksic fortress Bedem is a traditional place for various cultural events.
