Durmitor (Nacionalni park Durmitor) became the National Park in 1958. It was inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1980. Within 39 000 hectares of the nature conservancy zone, there are 18 glacial lakes, 748 mountain springs, 48 mountain peaks 2000 meters high with the highest peak Bobotov Kuk, which is 2 523 m high and. There are five mountain canyons, among which the most famous and longest one is The Tara River Canyon.
The National Park of Durmitor is not only ecological reserve of Montenegro, but also of all Europe. Untouched picturesque mountains and pine-woods, mountain rivers and lakes can amaze anyone, who has once visited this place. Astonishing flora and fauna of this park attracts lovers of nature. Besides, in winter Durmitor becomes an active winter resort. The most popular town of Durmitor ski resort is Žabljak. There is the longest snow skiing piste 2313m on the top of Savin Kuk.
The most famous and the biggest out of 18 lakes of Durmitor is Black Lake (Crno jezero), located at the foot of ski resort Zabljak. The Montenegrins call it "Black eyes". In winter lake is bigger and in summer it dries up partially, making a strait so that top view gives an idea of two eyes. Next to this lake, there are not less picturesque lakes Barno and Zminčkos Lake.
If go along the left side of Black lake to the mountain, you can reach Tito's cave (Titova pečina). It was used by Yugoslav partisans as a command unit during the battle on the north of the country.
One more amazing place to visit is the Ice cave (Ledena pečina), located under the peak Obla glava. The cave is full of mountain stalactite impresses with its beauty, but works fine just for the experienced tourists. It takes 4 hours to get to the cave. It is highly recommended to visit this place in the company of an experienced guide and special outfit.
More than 300 of animal specimen inhabit this area. Many of them are in Red Book. You can easily meet red fox, brown bear, grey wolf, mountain goat, marten, chamois and rabbit. European otter lives in the Tara River, which practically cannot be found in other European countries. Besides, there are 172 birds species and 150 species of butterflies. Flora of Durmitor counts 1600 species of different plant varieties. There is one of the few remaining virgin forests with black pine (Crna poda) in Europe, it can reach 45m height and the age of 400 years.

You can find samples of authentic Montenegrin architecture in the form of the national house "savardaak" in small settlements of Durmitor park. It is a house shaped like a cone with thatched roof. There are also Orthodox monasteries of St. Michael the Archangel (XV century), Dovolja (XV century), Dobrilovina (XVI-XVII century) with the Church of St. George. Next to Novakoviči village, ancient Roman tombs are found.
Church of the Transfiguration dated 1875 is located in Zhabljak. 8km to the east of Zhabljak, there are ruins of Pirlitor, a medieval fortress of XIV century. The main sightseeing of Durmitor park and the most popular theme of post cards for tourists is Djurdjeviča bridge. The bridge is located in Djurdjeviča Tara place, which was built by architecture Trijanovich in 1939. This is the very place with the most amazing view to the Tara River Canyon.
