As was customary in the Middle Ages, the town was built as a fortress. Inside the fortress you will be surprised to find a medieval town in its original form - with its narrow streets, squares and stone staircases leading to the elegant houses with small windows framed by hewn frames and red-tiled roofs. We will go to a high clock tower - the bell tower of St. John's Church. It is the most famous Catholic monument in Budva. There is a unique icon of Our Lady of Budva in the church. A little ahead there is a Citadel Fortress - the most important historical monument of the Mediterranean (entrance fee - 2 €), built 2500 years ago. In the fortress itself there are preserved watchtowers, ramparts, stairs and barracks, built by the Austrians in 1836 - the most impressive building of the fortress. Within the walls of the Citadel there is also a valuable collection of books and maps dedicated to the Balkans. A small Maritime Museum is also here, which presents a model of medieval ships. On one of the walls of the fortress there is a bas-relief with two intertwined fish - another symbol of Budva. It is connected with a beautiful legend that you will hear during the tour.
Lifehack: there is a restaurant in the Citadel, and if you go there on purpose, you have to inform the employee at the entrance to the fortress. In this case you won’t be charged any fee, and you’ll combine the pleasure of a delicious meal at a pleasant location with an impression of walking on the walls of the Citadel.
We’re continuing the walk around the Old Budva. Next, we have an acquaintance with the existing Orthodox church of the Holy Trinity, built in 1804, known for carved gilded iconostasis in the Baroque style with bright frescoes. Then we will pass near one of the oldest churches - the Catholic church of St. Maria in Punta. According to the legend, the history of this place began in 840, when the Spanish Benedictine monks arrived in Budva.
For an extra fee you can visit the Archaeological Museum. Here you will see the objects of Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Slavic cultures, gold coins and jewelry, glassware and ceramic vases and the most valuable exhibit of the museum is a fully preserved Illyrian bronze helmet, one of the first all-metal products of antiquity.
As you will see, a small town has managed to hold a history of many centuries and if you get tired of sightseeing a bit, as a compensation for the abundance of history, you can unwind by visiting the numerous cafes along the fortress wall.
