You cannot appreciate the beauty of Montenegro without seeing her real attractions, namely its canyons and national parks. It's amazing that such a small area gives a chance to enjoy the beauty of illimitable sea, majestic mountains and deepest canyons, and centuries-old, untouched forests and whimsical, willful mountain rivers.
Today's route will run from the coast to inland of continental Montenegro. Driving along the canyon of the Moraca River (the second largest in Europe), we will stop in the gorge plateau for photo pause. This is the deepest and narrowest place of the canyon. Then we go to the surrounded by the Alpine landscape Moraca monastery - one of the monumental medieval monuments of Montenegro. The monastery consists of two churches – Assumption of the Virgin Mary and St. Nicholas - and several monastic cells buildings. Abode is renowned for its rich frescoes. Here the fragments of images of XIII c. are preserved, and the main part of the walls are decorated with murals of outstanding masters of the XVII century. At the foot of the monastery from a mountain cliff breaks the waterfall "Svyatigora".
Next, the path passes through the National Park "Biogradska Gora", located in the northeast of the country in the central part of the mountain massif Bjelasica. Here are the ridges, and canyons, and forests, and meadows, and beautiful glacial lakes.
Lifehack: It’s better to come here from May to October. Take along warm clothes, in summer there is never warmer than + 25 ° C and daily temperature fluctuations reach 15C.
In the park there is a relict forest that makes this place one of the three unique corners throughout Europe. We stop near Biogradsko Lake - one of the glacial lakes, which is located at an altitude of 1094 m and is one of the most beautiful bodies of water in the Balkans, as well as the largest and most famous of all the glacial lakes in the park. After relaxing by the lake (you can have lunch at the restaurant, extra charge of 8 €) we take the path along the canyon of Tara River.
Tara River Canyon is the deepest one in Europe and the second largest in the world (after the Grand Canyon in the USA): its length is 82 km, and the maximum depth is 1.3 km. Since 1980, the canyon is a part of the National Park "Durmitor" and included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Tara and its canyon are the unique natural treasure: there is plenty of coves, hidden between rocky walls, in some places there are incredibly beautiful waterfalls, because of which the river has become a popular destination for rafting, and Montenegro has not anything alike. Numerous rapids, waterfalls and islands make it possible to obtain unforgettable feelings from the journey. But the main architectural attraction of the canyon is Dzhurdzhevicha bridge – a unique five-arched design 365 m in length, one of the highest road bridge in Europe, situated at an altitude of 172 m above the river. The way home.
